SAP Training and Certification in Nigeria – Everything You Need To Know

Brief Overview Of SAP And Its Importance In The Business World

As times are advancing, organizations and companies in Nigeria and the world at large are turning to technologies to increase their productivity, and one of them is a software system called System, Application, and Products (SAP).

According to SAP, over 87% of Fortune 2000 companies and 98% of the 100 most-valued brands globally, presently use SAP solutions to effectively carry out tasks in their organizations.

SAP is a software system created by a software company with the same name. It helps businesses manage their activities properly and makes accessing and sharing data easy for the employees of the organization.

It is built to also simplify and organize business processes and operations of any department in a company and the workers in it. It does this by making the flow of information, processing, and sharing of data effective for the workers in any given department of a company.

And although this software is built on an Enterprise Resource Planning System ( ERP) system, it has several features which start it out from other software which are built with this same system.

Haven looked at what the SAP software system is, let’s look at why it is significant to get trained and certified in the use of SAP.

What Is The Significance Of Sap Training And Certification?

The significance of SAP training is to gain the proper knowledge on how to work with SAP modules and use them to effectively carry out tasks.

Meanwhile, it is significant to get an SAP certification because it serves as a way of verifying that you have been adequately trained and you have the required knowledge to operate in an SAP environment.

It also gives you a better chance of being hired if you apply for jobs in such environments.

We will be talking more about the benefits of SAP certification in the next part of this article.

For now, let’s take a quick preview of the available SAP modules and courses.

Introducing The Available SAP Modules And Courses

ERP systems are known to have different modules, and SAP isn’t any different.

Since there are usually different departments in an organization, and each organization has different goals and interests, these modules are built differently to fit diverse goals and departments, business needs, and connect the people working in these departments.

Here is a list of the most in-demand SAP modules and courses which are available:

We will be taking a more in-depth look at these modules and courses in the upcoming sections of this article, but first, let’s take a look at the benefits of SAP certification.

What Are The Benefits of SAP Certification?

Here are the benefits of getting an SAP certification:

  • Improved Career Prospects

The first advantage of getting an SAP certification is that it improves your career prospects.

The increase in the demand for SAP solutions in organizations worldwide means there is also an increase in the demand for certified experts in the field worldwide.

So, having an SAP certification gives you a very higher chance of being hired by the organizations that have adopted the system, than people who aren’t certified yet.

This is because your certification shows that you have gained the required knowledge and you have been verified, and this builds the company’s trust in you.

And since companies over the world have adopted this system, you can use your certification to gain employment in companies outside Nigeria, as well.

Also, if you are already working in an organization that uses SAP, having a certification will give you an edge over those who have knowledge about it but aren’t certified in it.

Having a certification can also make the organization hand over more skilled tasks, and higher positions to you, ahead of those who aren’t certified.

And because you will be handling more complex tasks, and holding a higher role, you will earn more and enjoy more privileges than those who do not have a certification.

  • Enhanced Skills And Expertise

Before gaining an SAP certification, you are taught all you need to know about SAP modules and technologies, the solutions they provide, and how to properly use them. You also gain experience and expertise on how to work in the field.

The skills you gain from the certification program keep you relevant in your organization and also keep you up-to-date with the latest skills needed to adequately solve problems with the SAP software system.

  • Increased Credibility In The Industry

Having an SAP certification also increases your credibility in the industry you work in.

This credibility makes organizations put more trust in you to adequately carry out tasks.

This trust is built on the fact that an official SAP training provider has tutored you and given you a certification as a verification of your expertise.

  • Networking Opportunities

With SAP skills and certification, you will get recognized by notable organizations in your industry, and this recognition will give you access to new networking opportunities.

Being a certified SAP expert will also give you access to SAP communities, forums, and groups where you will get to meet with other SAP professionals in your field that you can share knowledge with and learn from.

Now, let us look at the SAP modules and courses that people are getting trained and certified in the most in 2023.

Tips For Choosing The Right SAP Module Based On Career Goals And Interests

Here are a few tips to help you pick the right SAP module for you:

  • Consider Your Industry

The goal of learning how to use SAP technology and getting certified in it is to either to get a job or move up the ladder in the organization you work in.

So, if you are learning it to get a job, the first thing you should consider before choosing which SAP module to get certified in is the type of modules that the organizations in your industry use to carry out their business processes.

When you get the knowledge about this, it will be easier to know the right SAP modules you should get skilled in.

However, if you already working in an SAP environment and are working towards getting certified, you should choose modules that you are already using in your organization.

  • Consider Your Educational Background

The next tip to help you pick the right module is to pick one that resonates with the field in which you have an educational background.

This way, you will be able to easily understand the terms and processes taught in the module because you were already learned a bit about them from your academic background.

For example, if you have an educational background in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or IT Management, the modules that relate to it are ABAP, BASIS, JAVA, Oracle, SCM, SAP UX, and many others.

However, if you are new to SAP technology and don’t know which module will fit your educational background then you can use the SAP CAREER GUIDANCE TOOL to simplify the process.

  • Consider The Domain You Have Knowledge About

Another factor you should consider before choosing the right SAP module that is right for you is the domain in which you have prior knowledge or experience. This will help you get a grip on the modules easier.

SAP modules are either functional or technical.

Functional SAP modules such as PP require knowledge of Production, FI/CO requires knowledge about costing and accounting, etc.

Meanwhile, Technical SAP modules such as BI/BO, ABAP, BASIC, etc., require more technical knowledge.

So, endeavor to choose the module which you have prior knowledge of and that works best for you and get skilled and certified in it.

Having knowledge about functionality and then ignoring it to study a technical SAP course is advice I wouldn’t give you.

Tips for Choosing the Right SAP Training Provider

There are a lot of SAP Training providers, so how do you know which one is right for you? Here are a few tips to help you make the right choice:

  • Course Content And Structure

Ensure you also check the structure and content of the courses which the training providers are offering before making a choice.

Ensure that their course covers all the key areas of your domain and has a structure to help you learn properly. This is because if a course has good content but isn’t structured well, you will find the learning process tiring and less interesting, and you might also find it difficult to understand the course.

  • Quality Of Trainers And Training Facilities

Last but not least, ensure the training provider you will choose has quality trainers and adequate training facilities if it is an offline program.

Can someone properly train you on something they don’t have adequate knowledge or experience about? No.

So, endeavor to confirm that the trainers in an institute are qualified before enrolling to learn from them.

And while training facilities aren’t needed when you are learning online, in physical training programs they play a major role in helping you learn about SAP technology properly.

Also, make sure the SAP training provider that you choose doesn’t only teach you about SAP modules and technologies but also provides you with the infrastructure to put the skills you have learned into practice.

  • Reviews

Finally, ensure you check the reviews of the SAP training institute that you want to enroll in and see what people who have learned from them are saying about them.

With the information that you will gather through this review, you can know whether to enroll with them or not.

  • Accreditation And Certification

The main aims of attending an SAP training program are to acquire knowledge about SAP technologies and the skills required to operate them and to get certified at the end of the training program.

However, not all SAP training institutes can give you a valid certificate when you are done with the program because they are not officially accredited to do so.

So, before choosing a training provider, endeavor to check if they are officially registered and can issue you a certificate after the period of the training.

Also, SAP certification exams can be a bit confusing especially if you are taking them for the first time, so to ensure you don’t get confused, we have compiled a list of the things you should know while taking an SAP certification exam. Let’s discuss them.

Things You Should Know While Preparing for SAP Certification Exams

Types of SAP certifications

While preparing for SAP certification exams, you must, first of all, know the type of certification exams you will be sitting for.

There are three major levels of SAP certifications: associate, professional and specialist certifications. Every other certification falls under these levels.

  • Associate Certification: Associate Certification is the level of certification you get after you have acquired the basic skills and knowledge to professionally offer SAP services or become an SAP consultant.

The skills and knowledge you gain from this certification program are usually broad and do not focus on any specific role.

Note: You are required to take associate certification exams once, but if a new version of the SAP solution you are certified in is released, then you will have to take another exam to maintain your certification and ensure that your knowledge and skills stay current.

  • Specialist Certification: Specialist Certification, on the other hand, is a level of certification that is higher than associate certification.

Unlike associate certification, this certification centers on one particular role.

When you are certified as an SAP specialist, you are offered higher roles and tasks than people who have just associate certifications.

  • Professional Certification: Professional Certification is the highest level of SAP certification.

Due to the advancement for this certification, before being offered one, you must have a proven and very high level of knowledge and exposure, and years of experience with SAP tools and solutions in your field.

Exam Format And Structure

Although there are notable similarities, the format and structure of SAP certification exams differ based on the specific certification program and the SAP technology or application which is being tested.

Certain SAP certification exams are broken down into various sections, with each section testing different aspects of the technology or application being tested. For instance, an SAP certification exam for SAP BASIS will have separate sections on user management, system administration, and database management.

Also, there is no specific number of questions that all certification exams have. The questions vary based on the level of certification which you are writing an exam for. However, the range of the questions is between 80 and 180.

This also applies to the time limit of the exams. They can also vary. However, the time range of most exams is usually 3 hours max.

The questions in SAP certification exams usually have multiple options which you choose from. These questions can either have one, two, three, or more answers, in this case, ensure to answer all of the correct options.

Answering one part correctly and answering another wrongly will make the entire question be marked wrong. Half marks aren’t given in the exams, your answer is either marked completely correct or completely wrong.

Finally, after you are done answering the questions on the exam, click the submit button just once and your result will immediately appear on your screen.

Tips For Successful Exam Preparation

The first tip for successful exam preparation is proper studies.

Ensure you go through the study materials and resources provided above and properly study the SAP courses which are relevant to the field in which you currently work or wish to work in.

From these resources, you can get the knowledge that will be helpful for you in the certification exams.

Secondly, go to the SAP training website speak to an agent and learn more about the certification exam you are about to write.

Gathering information such as the number of questions, the pass mark, the structure and format used in the sample questions, and the timeframe of the exam will come in handy in helping you successfully ace your certification exams.

In the next chapter, I have gathered a list of study materials and resources that can help you while preparing for your SAP certification exams. Keep reading.

Recommended Study Materials And Resources

Here is a list of recommended study materials and resources you should go through to help you in your certification exams:

At this point, let’s look at whether it is best to take online SAP training or In-person training.

Should I take Online Or In-person SAP Training?

Online and In-person SAP training have their pros, and the choice of which one is best differs from person to person. So, I highlighted the advantages of both trainings below, so you can go through them and choose the one that best suits you.

Advantages Of Online Training

The advantages of online SAP training include:

  • Expert Tutors: Most of the leading SAP training online belong to the SAP company or other top companies in the industry.

These companies do not entertain a below-par standard so they ensure their learning materials are written and taught by certified and proven professionals who have expertise in the SAP system.

So, learning from these materials gives you access to the wealth of experience that these experts have from working with the SAP system for years.

However, most in-person SAP training providers do not have as much experience with the SAP system as these experts and hence will find it difficult to offer a standout perspective to their projects or dive deep into certain areas of SAP as these experts do.

  • A Variety Of Options: When you are undergoing an SAP training program online, you have access to a lot of information that will help you implement projects successfully even if it is your first time.

With an online training program, several guides are made available to you to help you properly prepare for and ace your  SAP certification exams.

Also, subscribing to an online platform like SAP PRESS gives you access to numerous ebooks on different modules that you can use to gain adequate knowledge which will prepare you for your SAP certification exam.

As compared to the lesson manuals and notes that are used in in-person SAP training, these e-books are portable and make it easier for you to get particular information you are looking for, by just searching the keyword.

Also, once you have subscribed to SAP PRESS, whenever a new e-book is released, it will be automatically added to your subscription to help you continue with your learning process, and this helps you be up-to-date with the current trends and information in the SAP system.

  • Convenience: With online SAP training, you can learn at your pace and convenience. This is because, unlike in-person training programs, with just an internet connection you can access the learning materials from anywhere and complete them at your pace.

Advantages Of In-person Training

The advantages of in-person SAP training include:

  • Personal Guidance: The materials on online SAP training programs are created for the consumption of thousands if not millions of people, and hence aren’t created to fit the learning experience of a particular person.

So, if the materials aren’t tailored to fit how you learn then you might fit it difficult to properly comprehend it. However, in in-person training programs, the learning experience is personalized and you receive the guidance you need to properly understand what is being taught properly.

  • Prompt Answers: When you undergo in-person training programs, you can ask questions immediately if you are not clear about what is being taught and answers and clarification will immediately be given to you by the trainer. This isn’t possible with online SAP training.

Also, with in-person SAP training, after every theoretical lesson, practical exercises are given so that you can immediately apply what you have been taught for better understanding.

  • Opportunities To Network: In-person SAP training gives you access to network with other trainees and professionals in the field. This can help you build valuable connections and collaborations which will be helpful to you as you advance in your SAP journey.

If you opt for self-study, here are some free and paid resources to help in your learning process.
